![]() Stressful spreadsheet-centred evenings will often prompt panicked brides like myself to scramble for the services of a wedding planner. And all of us are hoping to get married for the last time, so the pressure we feel about planning this once-in-a-lifetime party could be exploited. Most people who are getting married are doing it for the first time, so we don’t always have the nous to negotiate. I can still induce a rush of blood to my own head when I recall the venue which, at the end of a lengthy brochure which had made reassuring nods to value for money, finally revealed that for €26,000 I would just about cover their venue rental fee, and little more else other than a “snack”. I too would ‘prefer’ not to focus on pricing, but having spent many irrecoverable hours contacting wedding venues and vendors that I did not realise I could never afford, I have formed the strong opinion that everyone should stop being so exasperatingly demure about how expensive it is to get married. ![]() One of the stupidest parts of trying to plan a wedding in Ireland is having to tolerate the industry-wide effort to maintain the fallacy that the price of things simply does not matter. Among the numerous allegedly regretful declinations to speak to me, one exclusive venue explained that they simply “prefer not to focus on pricing”. I, a philistine to the art of civil parlance, had desecrated the divine mystery that shrouds the various castles and country piles of Ireland by not only finding out how much they charge to hold a wedding, but threatening to publicise it as well. I was often left with the distinct impression that some venues had written their curt replies with one hand, using the other to hold their nose as they struggled to cope with my stinking vulgarity. I approached some wedding venues who were hiking their prices and explained that, while I thought the increases were notable, I was, of course, sympathetic to the extraordinary global factors that had led to remarkable inflation, which the wedding industry was just as susceptible as any other business to. I was recently doing a little bit of research on the dramatic rise in the price of weddings between this summer and next. ![]()
